Eggs

The female butterfly can lay up to 1,600 eggs in the course of their life. Eggs are laid with a covering that glues them to the leaf or twig where they are placed and then hardens to form a protective, waterproof shell. Most butterflies lay eggs singly, some, however, lay in clusters. A complete life cycle of a butterfly population is called a brood. Some species have just one brood a year, while others may have four or five.

Nectar Plants

The butterfly bush and the butterfly weed seem irresistible to butterflies.

They also love marigolds, mallow, meadowsweet, violets and clover. They love the dogwood trees as well as oak, cherry and elm.

Buckeye

Buckeyes have distinctive "eyespots" on their wings. These butterflies prefer open areas with low vegetation. They also need bare earth to perch on, such as a dirt road.
