The Faith of the Littlest Roll
By: Rosalie Dale Bullock
I would like to dedicate this little story to my son, Mark, who inspired me to write it.
I wrote this little story some 40 years ago.
It really did clear up Mark's questions and those of my other children, Chris and Michelle.
I have told this story many times since then to children of all ages, even teenagers.

Preface
Theory of Charles Robert Darwin
(1808 - 1882)
Charles Robert Darwin, born in Shrewsbury, England, made many original observations on animals and plants and conducted numerous experiments with them.
But he was not satisfied simply to discover new facts; he wished to find some way to explain how all the many forms of life came to live where they do and to have the size and habits that they do.
Darwin believed that there was a natural struggle continuously going on in nature between the weak and the strong, and that those animas which could survive under the worst conditions were the ones to win the competition.
Darwin formulated a number of explanations. The best known of his theories is that of the origin of species by natural selection. The main idea emphasized by Darwin in this theory is that life has gradually unfolded, or evolved (hence evolution), having progressed from the simpler types like sponges and hydra to the more complex with division of labor and differentiated organs.

Now for the Story...
The Faith of the Littlest Roll
By: Rosalie Dale Bullock
With all the doubts and questions we have today about everything, especially about God, I often wondered just how to explain and answer any questions my three children would have about the Bible, God and Evolution.
One day the question came! My oldest son, Mark, age 10 asked while his brother, Chris, age 7 and his sister, Michelle, age 4 looked and listened very intently.
Mom, "I saw a scientist on television the other day say that we were not made as Adam and Eve by God in the beautiful Garden of Eden but that through a lot of light, heat, water, time and a lot of other things we were once just one cell."
Through millions of years we have come to be what we are today. Is this true? I am so confused Mom, I wish I really knew and could put my mind at rest.
I said to all three children to set down while I prepared the evening meal.
I was just beginning to make hot rolls as I often do.
Let's pretend that I am God.
Let's pretend that the rolls can talk among themselves.
At this point I had the undivided attention of all three children. I said to them, "now let's see, you can be the Angels that God made in the
beginning."
First, let's review the story in Genesis, Chapter 1 - 2.

In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.
The earth was without form and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the Spirit of God was moving over the face of the waters.
And God said, "Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it separate the waters from the waters."
And God made
the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament.
And God
called the firmament Heaven.
And God said, "Let the waters under the heavens be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear." And it was so. God called the dry land Earth, and the waters that were gathered together He called Seas. And God said, "Let the earth put forth vegetation, plants
yielding seed and fruit trees bearing fruit in which is their seed, each according to its kind, upon the earth." And it was so.
And God said, "Let there be lights in the firmament of the
heavens to separate the day from the night; and let them be for signs and for
seasons and for days and years, and let them be lights in the firmament of the
heavens to give light upon the earth." And it was so. And God
made the two great lights, the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser
light to rule the night; he made the stars
also.

And God set them in the firmament of the heavens to give light upon the earth, to rule over the day and over the night, and to separate the light from the darkness. And God said, "Let the waters bring forth swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the firmament of the heavens."
So
God created the great sea monsters and every living creature that moves, with
which the waters swarm, according to their kinds, and every winged bird
according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.
And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kinds: cattle and creeping things
and beasts of the earth
according to their kinds." And it was so. And God made the
beasts, cattle, and everything that creeps upon the ground.
And God saw that it was good.
Then God said, "Let us make man in our image, after our
likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the
birds of the air, the cattle, over all the earth, and over every creeping thing
that creeps upon the earth."
So God created man in his own image, in
the image of God... He created him; male and female He created them. And God
blessed them, and God said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply, and
fill the earth and subdue it; and have dominion over the fish of the sea
and
over the birds of the air and over every living thing that moves upon the
earth," And God said, "Behold, I have given you every
plant yielding seed which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree with
seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. And to every beast of the
earth, and to every bird of the air, and to everything that creeps on the earth,
everything that has the breath of life, I have given every green plant for food." And it was so.
And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day. thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.
Then I said to the children " angels, are of a higher form than we are here on earth so they can hear the rolls talking among themselves, okay? " And they agreed that they would be the Angels in heaven. Remember now that I will play the part of God.
Remember now that we have already learned that in six days
God created the Heavens, Earth, Night, Day, Water and all living creatures
including Adam and Eve,
then on the seventh day He rested and was pleased with what He saw.
Now let's begin to make the rolls.
I start with a little flour, sugar, water and yeast. I stir and mix, stir and mix until I have the dough just the way I want it. Then, I let the dough stand in a bowl in a warm place several hours. It rises, gets about three times as big as when I so carefully placed it in the bowl to let it rise. It is now ready to be taken out of the bowl and kneaded or if you prefer squashed again and again. Then with my hands, like God, I formed the rolls, some bigger than the others, some not so round and some shaped sort of funny and little. I put them all on a baking sheet and waited still another two hours. I am very proud of my rolls as is God proud of each one of us.
Then the rolls became ready for the oven. I put them in, they went through a heating process or as we know they were baked. Then I removed them from the oven. They looked so good. I can hardly wait to eat them. That was the purpose of them when I made them.
I sat them on the cabinet in order to finish preparing the rest of the evening meal. This is when all of a sudden the biggest roll on the baking sheet stood up and began to talk, "let me introduce myself."
"I am the well known scientist, Charles Robert Darwin." "I'll tell you rolls how you came to be." "You were not made on purpose, you just happened by mistake." He began to laugh.
Then one little roll stood up and said "I don't believe you." "I believe someone made us for a purpose and it was love and care taken when we were created." "I believe we have a purpose waiting for us even now."
The big scientist roll laughed again and said, "You are not a very smart roll." "Listen and I'll tell you all about it?"
In the very beginning there was this white soft stuff, (we know this is the flour the big roll is talking about) some sweet grains (sugar is what we know he is talking about now) dark gummy stuff (this is the yeast he is talking about). Well, they were all mixed together just by some sort of crazy air being responsible for this act.
Then the big roll said, "water was added and made the mixture sticky." "Then it was thrown aside for some time." However my children, we know that you must include this waiting process or the rolls would not turn out very good. So it had to be this way.
The big scientist roll told the other rolls who were listening very quietly that for some unknown reason this sticky matter was formed in some large round forms, some small forms and some in other shapes. The big roll said, "I really don't know why but these shapes were sort of forgotten about for another period of time. With this remark some of the other rolls began to laugh at the big roll. The big roll began to get madder and madder! Just let me finish, he went on. I will convince you that I am right. These little round shapes were put through a great heating process. We know the roll is now talking about when the rolls were put into the oven to be cooked according to the plan of the cook. Then he stood up big and tall and proud and said, "I am glad I turned out to be big, brown and warm."
He laughed and said, it took a real long time for us to get into the form we are now."
With this, the littlest roll had had just about enough. He stood up and said, "I don't believe you!" "I believe we were made by someone very special." I believe we have been created for a purpose to be loved and enjoyed and eaten and you are wrong when you say things like you have been telling us."
The big roll said, "you just wait and see I'll be the first one to be eaten and that will be the end, you will probably be left on the baking sheet just to turn cold and later be thrown away. "No, no," shouted the little roll, "our purpose is to be eaten and enjoyed, I'll show you." When they were placed on the table all the rolls were eaten and the little roll sat patiently waiting to be chosen.
Finally, a little hand reached in the basket and picked up the littlest roll of all and he heard an angelic voice say, "I like the rolls you baked for us, the last one always seems to be the sweetest one of all." I know you love us very much, Mom.
The little roll had a
tear in his eye
and he knew there must be, there just had to be a
creator.
So you see children, God is real!! He is alive!! He loves us very much!! He is very much alive!!
Just like me, the cook, I am very much alive, but the rolls had no positive way of knowing that.
The littlest roll had faith which was all he needed to know and be happy.
Our purpose is to love God and love one another. In the end we will be with God and be happy forever.
Mark then said, "Mom, God's plan for us is so great but yet so simple." I love Him. Thank you for helping me see it so plain. I don't have any more doubts now.
I love you Mom, you are the best.©
